Cash & Fire Ratings

Cash Ratings

A security safe’s cash rating relates to the amount of cash that it can securely store according to insurers, and takes into account the particular security features of the safe and degree of difficulty a burglar would have breaking into the safe. In other words, the greater the cash rating, the more secure from burglary the safe is.

Safes with higher cash ratings have more security features that make them more secure, such as thicker doors and bodies, more locking bolts, and greater quality locks. All these features are detailed in the product’s description for you to consider when making a decision.

For the contents of your safe to be covered by your insurance, the safe will also need to be installed correctly according to the manufacturer’s instructions (possibly by a professional), and left properly locked at all times.

For safes that do provide a cash rating the rating typically ranges between $5,000 – $500,000, the details of which are detailed on each safe’s product information.

Fire Ratings

A safe’s fire rating indicates the duration of time the contents of the safe will be protected from damage in the event of exposure to significant fire. The ratings generally range from either 0 (no fire protection), to 30 mins, 60 mins, 90 mins, 2 hours, 4 hours. Additionally, a safe will offer protection from fire for certain types of materials, typically either paper/jewellery on the one hand, or electronics / data on the other.

Fire resistant engineering elements include:

  • High strength fire chambers on the safe door and the body
  • Fire resistant mineral compound constructed between steel plates and heavy duty fire walls
  • Expanding fire seals provide extra protection in case of attack
